Ordered Links
  • metafilter
You really should open this thing up every once in a while. Metafilter unfailingly provides an interesting line, a quirky viewpoint. It also appears to be customizable, but I haven't yet figured out why that would be good for me.

  • google
Perfect for that moment of hesitation before you begin your next surfing session. The Google search engine is indispensable, well-crafted, and nearly always on the nose. Added bonuses: Google Images, Google Directory, and Google Groups.

  • google images
Too many images to discuss. Go find them here.

  • google directory
This is the best place to go for more general Internet needs. For those times when you are only remotely aware that you even want to spend time on the Web, the google directory is KING.

  • metaspy
The crème de la crème for absolute random web encounters. This self-updating list of actual searches that are going on EVEN AS WE SPEAK, is priceless fodder for the voyeuristic, lazy-ass donkey inside you. This is the uncut dope, so be prepared to click hyperactively.

  • arstechnica
This is a great place to go for updates on tech news. The breadth of material covered and linked up is this site's principal strength. The writing is good too. Added bonus: the site was founded by a Classics grad student at Harvard.

  • washington post
Poster boy for the liberal media. Home of Bob Woodward. Extremely well-written, incisive, insightful, and solid news source. In this case 1 out of 3 ain't bad. Get the latest from inside and outside the beltway here.

  • cnn
CNN is cutting edge again. On a downward spiral for some years, the events of September 11th have breathed new life into this news channel. Everything that the cable broadcast is lacking, this web site makes up for. Streaming video segments, breaking news, comprehensive news coverage that is easy to manage.

  • msnbc
The best thing about this site is the interface, particularly for the broadband user. The menu bar is a thing of mystery and wonder because you are always 3 hovers and 1 click away from any story. Relationships with Newsweek, Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal make the content that much more robust.

  • yahoo news
Surface treatment of the top stories. While the content is not as rich as that on other news sites, this is a great place to get the quick skinny on affairs in the world. Also, a nice fit with your Yahoo portal--if you're into that kind of thing.

  • cnet news
Tech news. CNET news is to arstechnica.com as Yahoo news is to the Washington Post. The big gripe: CNET continues to use the news.com domain name for a tiny segment of the latest and greatest.

  • BBC
Nice for a comprehensive (if insipid) look from the European vantage point.

  • detritus
If it is the thought that counts, then detritus scores 1. This is site devoted to recycling culture and found art. The intent is noble, the ideology stark. The random quotes and exhibits are a nice touch that keep this site fresh. Now if we could just get some more frequent or regular updates…

  • epitonic
This is an excellent space for exploring new music. It is clear from the layout and interface that the sponsors are true music lovers. Of particular moment: the epitonic radio application--best if you have your PC hooked up to a stereo system.

  • garage band
The most creative pyramid scheme ever invented. A higher caliber of independent music than most, and a better sense of humor. Garageband was at least partially founded by ex-Talking Heads keyboardist Jerry Harrison.

  • IMDB
An indespensable reference tool for modern day America. If you don't like movies, you are outside of the six sigmas and should not consult this site. For everybody else, this will answer 95% of all movie trivia questions that arise in the course of typical daily conversation.
